Envision Your Future Session

Published on: January 23, 2016

Envision Your Future SessionPart of SHIELD’s curriculum is to help participants explore their desired future and set important goals while turning talk into action. LaToya Bush, a former volunteer for SHIELD and Human Resource Consultant, enjoyed sharing with the girls in the program how her ability to start her career in human resources as a intern for a local staffing agency helped her continue her aspirations to further her career in human resources. Tori Gurley, a Wide Receiver for the Toronto Argonauts and in his 5th year of being a professional football player, added to the session to help the young boys in the program understand his roadmap to becoming a four year NFL veteran spending seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and Buffalo Bills.

Chelsea Hughes, a Business administration/communications graduate with over three years of management experience, worked with the program participants to create vision boards.

Self-Awareness & Relationship Building Sessions

Published on: January 23, 2016

Taunya Monroe and Alana V. AllenThe 2015-2016 program year kicked off with an orientation session on August 29thMentees, mentors & volunteers were presented with an overview of program objectives, curriculum and expectations. Precious McKoy, Executive Director & Founder, also explained the mentoring relationship and began to set expectations for mentee success.

The early fall sessions focused on self-awareness with guest speaker Ms. Taunya Monroe, a "shepreneur" of Pearls of Wisdom Wellness. Mentees learned about personal hygiene, grooming techniques and the importance of their outward appearance. They also walked away with some great sample products! Looking good, smelling good and feeling good are all important characteristics of leaders.

Alana V. Allen, a community organizer and public relations professional, also joined SHIELD to develop a relationship with our program participants. Pictured to the right she is working with AJ and Markell to help them write empowerment and self growth affirmation statements.

Kiera Hereford with HarmonyBy late fall, the mentees were ready to dive into the relationship-building section of the curriculum. Kiera Hereford, Program Director, has been volunteering her time since 2014 and establishes strong bonds with all mentees. One that she has an especially strong bond with is Harmony, a current mentee. Although SHIELD’s curriculum is based on group sessions, mentees know that they always have the option of having private discussions when needed.

A Message from the Founder/Executive Director

Published on: November 17, 2015

Precious McKoy, Founder/Executive DirectorThanks so much for your continued support as we launch a new look and new vision for the 2015-2016 Program Year.  I am excited as we embark on our seventh (7th) year of existence.  When I began this organization my desire was to do my part in the very community I grew up in to reach young people that could benefit from having a place to develop leadership skills.

It is because of the generosity of active participants, such as yourself, that we are able to contribute to the well-being of our youth in a number of ways. For example, an hour of your time is more valuable than any expense when a child knows that you are available to them by choice. It is also simple to support SHIELD Mentor Program if you’re unable to consistently contribute your time, but you know of someone who may benefit from SHIELD program. All you have to do is refer or enroll someone between ages 9-18 years old, and then we are able to give the priceless investment of a mentor. Lastly, your financial support helps to carry the legacy of SHIELD to continue to enable deserving youth with opportunities to participate in SHIELD programs at no cost. If you're interested in learning more about our program, visit our website.

With gratitude,
